Criminal Appeal

call usBowden Jones are pleased to announce that Criminal Appeal specialist Glyn Maddocks has recently joined their Criminal Appeals and Miscarriage of Justice Unit as a Consultant.

Over the last 20 years, Glyn has developed an almost unprecedented knowledge and experience of dealing with cases of wrongful conviction.

In 2005, in recognition of his work over a twelve year period representing Paul Blackburn, who had his conviction quashed after serving nearly 25 years Glyn was named Welsh Lawyer of the Year. Glyn was praised by the Judges for his outstanding contribution to fighting injustice over a long period of time and for his unstinting determination to correct wrongful convictions.

Through his work with Appeal cases Glyn Maddocks has developed a deep understanding and knowledge of the processes and procedures of the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the Court of Appeal and in obtaining compensation for victims of miscarriage of justice from the Ministry of Justice.

In the last year, he has been involved in:

  • acting for Paul Gallagher in a complex shaken baby case. The case was referred to Glyn Maddocks following a reference by the Attorney General. His conviction for the murder of his 11 day old son was quashed by the Court of Appeal in July 2008
  • acting for John Roden in a long standing South Wales murder case. Despite a ten year investigation by the CCRC the Court of Appeal refused to quash the conviction and Glyn Maddocks continues to work on this case by submitting an application to the European Court of Justiceand supporting those who are determined that a miscarriage justice has been suffered by John Roden
  • acting in the high profile case of Tony Stock who was convicted of a robbery in 1970 and whose case has now been to the Court of Appeal on four separate occasions each time unsuccessfully. Tony Stock's case made legal history having being the first case to be referred to the Court of Appeal twice. Because of its unusual features it continues to be the subject of a great deal of legal, media and public attention

Glyn Maddocks  also  represented Johnny Kamara who  served 17 years in prison for a murder in Liverpool before his conviction was quashed in 2001  and for Michael Frost who was  wrongly convicted  for murdering an elderly friend of his Grandfather. He also acted for Donna Clarke one of the Merthyr Three in successfully appealing her murder conviction. Recently Glyn Maddocks has represented Jamie Sneddon whose conviction for Section 20 ABH was quashed by the Court of Appeal after the chief prosecution witness who also happened to be a local magistrate, was convicted of perjury.

At present he is actively working on a number of cases where his extensive links with a number of highly specialised forensic and other experts and leading criminal lawyers are likely to prove significant in producing the fresh evidence that will enable the CCRC to decide to refer the case to the Court of Appeal.

Glyn Maddocks is an experienced lecturer and broadcaster and has written about the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the appeal system. He is delighted to be joining the very experienced Bowden Jones Criminal Appeals team and is happy to take referrals for miscarriage of justice cases/CCRC and appeal cases throughout the Country.

Client Testimonials

I was sat serving a life sentence with my world crushed for a crime that I did not commit. Bowden Jones Solicitors took up my case as a miscarriage of justice when all others had turned their back on me. After 9 years in prison my conviction was overturned in the Court of Appeal after earlier appeals had failed. Bowden Jones showed faith and belief in me and without them I would be looking at the rest of my life behind bars for a crime I did not commit. I cannot put into words the gratitude and the respect that I have for the partners at Bowden Jones who believed in me when no-one else did. Mr G – Newcastle, Tyne & Wear
